Bangalore Cravings

One by Two: one idea, shared two ways, and a year of work that says out loud what your customers already do, that this is the best dosa in Melbourne

What we talked about, in your order

The six things from the meeting, in order. We cover them one by one.

1

The website

A website that takes orders and shows the full menu clearly.

2

The room

Make the room feel like Bengaluru. Prints first, more when you want it.

3

The menu

A menu that explains itself: a descriptive line under every dish, and a key.

4

The socials

Twelve posts a month, made and posted for you.

5

Your own orders

Order and pay on your own website. The delivery apps' cut stays with you.

6

Somewhere to send the overflow

Groups of six or more can book ahead. A special helps fill quiet days.

One by Two is the only thing here nobody can copy

Every other South Indian place in Melbourne sells the dish. You are the one that can sell the city.

Your customers got there firstThey walk in and put you next to Vidyarthi Bhavan, VV Puram, a darshini. You have never had to claim it.
It survives being copiedSomeone can open a dosa counter down the road tomorrow. They cannot be from where you are from.
It writes a year of postsThe people, the feeling, the memories, the sayings and the food. Five series, one idea.

With reviews that have people flying from Sydney to try it, and associations with places iconically Bangalore that you already own

Your food has stories that need to be told.

“Flew down from Sydney to try this place & boy what a great idea it was. Worth every penny I paid for the flights.”

Faz Sherieff, Local Guide

“Lived in Aus for six years and this is the first dosa I've had that actually tastes like authentic Bangalore dosa !!!!! Thank you thank you thank you.”

Mariam Madiha, Local Guide

“The best dosa in Melbourne. Come here if you want to experience VIDYARTHI BHAVAN of Bangalore style crisp ghee dosas.”

Asheesh Joshi, Local Guide

Paid, behind a post

Spend behind one post, pushed to a community you choose, like people who live in Clayton.

Example
Dosa Hut runs these behind every one of its shopfronts. Your page runs none.
Advantage
You control who sees it, and you can turn it up the week you need covers.
Disadvantage
It stops the day you stop paying.
A Dosa Hut post

Dosa Hutruns spend behind posts like this. Your page runs none.

Paid, through a creator

An influencer paid to make content for your audience.

Example
Chilli India. Their own best post did 71,420 plays; a creator posting about them, unpaid, did 133,158.
Advantage
Someone else's credibility, borrowed instantly.
Disadvantage
The most expensive reach you can buy, and the audience can tell.

328,838 playsa creator at your window, and nobody paid.

Organic

Content that goes out to all of Instagram, and the algorithm decides where it lands.

Example
Yours, below. You posted it, left it alone, and it did 10,004 plays.
Advantage
It costs nothing but time, and it compounds.
Disadvantage
You cannot choose who sees it, and you cannot schedule a result.

10,004 playsyour own, posted and left alone.

There is a cultural love for what you bring to the table. Our job is to sharpen that, not to copy what everyone else is posting.

168×

A creator's post about you did 328,838 plays, a hundred and sixty-eight times your own median of 1,961, and nobody paid for it. Your own best is 17,334. You already have the organic. What you do not have is a way to put spend behind the posts that work, into the suburbs that matter, on the weeks that need it.

It starts with a brand system

One set of colours, one logo, one way of writing. The truck, the menu, the wall and the feed all look like the same place, so people know you before they read the name.

On a menu that sells your best dishes for you

Your names stay. Under each one goes a line in plain English, so nobody has to ask what it is.

For the ones who cannot choose, a quiz that orders for them

Scan the code at the counter or on the menu, answer three taps, and it names your dish. You are known for more than dosas and idlis, and this is how a first-timer finds the rest.

  1. 1

    Scan

The code sits on the counter card and the menu corner, right where the choosing happens.

  2. 2

    Answer

Three taps: how hungry, how much heat, sweet or savoury. Twenty seconds, no app to install.

  3. 3

    Order

It names the dish, says what it is in one line, and the counter hears the same words you do.

The table tent, face A: the Bangalore Cravings mark, the Kannada question, Confused what to order, and the QR code The table tent, face B: the same question on the cream face, with the three taps named and the QR code
It stands on the table and faces both ways, so whoever is sitting down is looking at the code.

Fixing what-to-order takes three things working together: a stronger website, the branding, signage and menu guiding the room, and the feed tying it together online.

And a front door that opens the way the place feels

Your name, assembled out of the two languages it belongs to, and then a Bengaluru morning you can walk into.

ops.yaaarn.com/bc/site

And in a room that looks like the food tastes

Hughesdale, as it is today. What changes is what you choose to change.

The room with the printed panels hung
Days Prints on the bare wall. Nothing structural.
The same room with picture lights over the prints
Weeks Picture lights over each one, and the wall washed warm.
The same room with panelling, wallpaper and a stone counter
Later Both walls panelled, the counter in stone, timber tables, rattan chairs, steel thali and tumbler on every table.

Same room, same camera, one change at a time. How far you go is your call, and nothing here is structural until the last one.

And a reason to come on the quiet days

Test longer hours by measuring demand first. A discounted special is the cheapest way to find out because people tell you in advance they are coming.

The check-in page on a phone: today's special, the check-in price against the walk-in price, and the short form to say you are coming

The special measures the day. Put one dish up at a lower price for anyone who says they are coming. You get a count, service by service, for the days you are thinking of opening.

Walk in, or book if you are six or more. Nothing changes for one, two or four. Groups of six or more can book so you can join tables before they arrive.

A feed nobody else in Melbourne could post

Three jobs: help people explore the food, tell the story of who started it and who makes it, and show how it is made and where it comes from. Five series carry them, from what your customers already say.

The maker spreading batter, carrying his own line

The Makers

How you started, Monday prep before open, the grocery run through the community, and why you make it the way you do.

If you'd asked me my 5-9 here was making dosas in melbourne…
Two people eating dosa at a table

The Feeling

What they miss about home, at the table where they found it again.

Back home this table would have had four more people around it.
A woman in the back of an auto, hair flying

Memorabilia

What Bengaluru had, against what Melbourne has instead.

Melbourne trams are so nostalgic but nothing compares to wind in your face in an auto
Four adults on one scooter

The Sayings

The lines you only hear in Bengaluru, and the moment that earns each one.

Food

The dishes one at a time, so people order past the dosa. The rice baths first.

Kesari bath

Which is what they look like running together

The people, the feeling and the memories.

Three ways to pay for the same work

Same work in all three. What changes is when you pay and how we share the risk.

Pay once.

A. Buy it outright

$7,500plus GST, once, for the build

Pay once and it is yours. Ordering on your site and the app are add-ons, priced on the last slide, when you want them. Nothing ongoing unless you ask for it.

Pay a share.

B. Small start, then a share of sales

$3,000plus GST to start, then a share of sales for twelve months

The percentage comes from your own numbers: share your last three months of sales with us and we set it together, sized to the business. It runs for twelve months.

Pay monthly.

C. A setup, then a monthly retainer

$4,500plus GST setup, then $2,500 a month

The whole build is included: the website, the menus, your logo refreshed, and the photography, plus everything monthly. Twelve months minimum, then month to month. You pay less up front than buying it outright because the commitment covers the difference.

The website is yours either way. If we stop working together, it stays yours.
